Game of Thrones characters’ family tree: How is Jon Snow related to Daenerys Targaryen? The hit fantasy drama returns on Sunday July 17, a full year after the reveal that Jon Snow is not the illegitimate child of Ned Stark, but rather the son of Ned’s sister Lyanna. In the season six finale, Jon’s supposed half-brother Bran saw a vision of Lyanna dying shortly after childbirth. In her final moments, she made her virtuous brother promise that he would raise her son as his own. The scene gratified sharp-witted fans who had worked out Jon’s true parentage from details given in George RR Martin’s original books. While the episode stopped short of revealing who Jon’s father is, many fans believe that it is Rhaegar Targaryen, brother of Daenerys. Shortly after the episode aired, HBO released this infographic which confirms the theory. Jon and Daenerys are set to meet in season seven, with many fans hoping that they will work out their blood connection. Ahead of the show’s return, here is a look at the family trees of Westeros’ six most powerful dynasties. GAME OF THRONES SEASON 7 RELEASE DATE. Jon Snow was raised as the illegitimate son of Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark and grew up with his supposed half-siblings Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon, under the watchful eye of Ned’s wife Catelyn. Ned was beheaded in season one, while Catelyn, Robb and his wife Talisa were murdered at the Red Wedding. Rickon died during the Battle of the Bastards, which saw Jon and Sansa recapture the Stark’s ancestral home, Winterfell. Ned was the son of Rickard Stark and the brother of Benjen, Lyanna and Brandon Stark. Lyanna was kidnapped by Rhaegar Targaryen, the older brother of Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen, and the son of the Mad King Aerys. Rickard and Brandon were killed by the Mad King Aerys Targaryen as they protested Lyanna’s imprisonment. Benjen was the First Ranger of the Night’s Watch, but was killed by a White Walker north of The Wall. He was saved by the Children of the Forest, but can no longer pass south of The Wall due to his undead status. Daenerys Targaryen is the younger sister of Viserys and Rhaegar Targaryen, making her Jon Snow’s aunt. Her father was the Mad King Aerys, who was killed by his own kingsguard Jaime Lannister in the Sack of King’s Landing, before Daenerys was even born. Like the Lannisters, the Targaryens are known to practice incest. Aerys’s wife and the mother of his children was his sister, Rhaella. GAME OF THRONES MAP. Cersei Lannister is the widow of King Robert Baratheon, and the mother of the late Kings Joffrey and Tommen, and the Princess Myrcella. She is in an illicit relationship with her twin brother Jaime, who is the father of her three children. Incest is common in the Lannister family. Cersei’s father, Tywin, and her mother, Joanna, were first cousins. Joanna died while giving birth to the youngest Lannister sibling, Tyrion. Yara and Theon Greyjoy are the two surviving children of Balon and Alannys Greyjoy. Their older brothers Rodrik and Maron were both killed while fighting for their father in the Greyjoy Rebellion. Years later, Balon was murdered by his brother, Euron, who has now vowed to kill Yara and Theon. Lady Olenna is the only surviving blood member of House Tyrell, after Cersei Lannister murdered her son Mace and her grandchildren Margaery and Loras with wildfire at the Great Sept of Baelor. Mace is survived by his wife Alerie, who has never been seen on Game of Thrones. Margaery was widowed three time before her death, first by Renly Baratheon, and then by his nephews Joffrey and Tommen. Robert Baratheon became king after Aerys was killed, with his wife Cersei at his side as queen. He was mortally wounded while boar hunting, with his death sparking the war for the Iron Throne. Robert believed he was the father of Cersei’s three children by her brother, Jofrrey, Myrcella and Tommen. He also had many illegitimate children, only one of whom – Gendry – survives. His younger brothers Stannis and Renly also died in pursuit of the throne. Stannis used blood magic to have Renly killed, and was himself executed by Brienne of Tarth for his crimes.
